This term marked an exciting milestone at AgileMind — the launch and completion of our first coding term for Year 8 students at Randwick School. Over the past several weeks, our classroom was buzzing with curiosity, creativity, and plenty of learning moments.
A Diverse and Dynamic Group
Our students came with a wide range of experience:
- Some had previous exposure to coding and were eager to explore advanced ideas.
- Some were completely new and cautious about “how coding works.”
- Some focused on creating flashy, fun characters, expressing their artistic side.
- And yes — there were a few mischievous personalities who kept the classroom lively!
This diversity made teaching both challenging and rewarding. Each lesson required careful attention to different learning speeds, styles, and interests, ensuring every student could participate, succeed, and feel confident.
What We Covered
Through hands-on, interactive sessions, students explored foundational programming concepts:
- Sequences: Learning how programs follow step-by-step instructions.
- Events: Making programs respond to clicks, keypresses, and interactions.
- Loops: Automating repeated actions to create movement and animations.
- IF Conditions: Introducing decision-making logic to make programs dynamic.
From making their sprite talk and move to reacting to clicks and keypresses, every child experienced the joy of creating something that works — a powerful confidence booster for young learners.
Challenges and Lessons Learned
Working with kids for the first time brought its own lessons:
- Some students quickly mastered coding blocks, while others needed more guidance.
- Keeping engagement high meant blending creativity with structured tasks.
- Celebrating small wins helped even the most hesitant students enjoy coding.
The most important lesson? Coding is as much about confidence and curiosity as it is about logic.
Looking Ahead: Term 2 – Creating Games
With foundational skills under their belts, we’re excited for Term 2, where students will design and build their first games. They’ll combine everything they’ve learned: sequences, events, loops, and conditions, all within fun, interactive projects.
Our goal is simple: make coding fun, creative, and empowering. By nurturing curiosity and problem-solving skills, we’re preparing our students not just to write programs, but to think like creators and innovators.
Stay tuned for updates — we can’t wait to showcase the amazing games our Year 8 students at Randwick School will build!
